Where to stay in Sagres

Sagres guide hub

Sagres stays - fortress-town hotels, Martinhal family resort, surf hostels, and when to use Lagos instead.

Sagres is the wind-sculpted peninsula at the south-west tip of the Algarve — surf bays below the town, fortress walls above the Atlantic, and Cabo São Vicente sunsets a short drive away. Stays cluster in the town itself, at Martinhal beach, or on rural lanes toward the cape; nightlife is minimal compared with Lagos, which is roughly 35 minutes east.

Who Sagres suits

Sagres works when the holiday is built around swell, cliffs, and early evenings. Surf learners on Mareta, intermediate riders checking Tonel and Beliche, and walkers who want Costa Vicentina viewpoints without Lagos crowds all fit here. Families with older kids who treat the beach as sport rather than a calm paddling pool do well with a car and flexible plans.

If you need guaranteed calm swimming, rooftop cocktail strips, or a wide choice of fine-dining rooms on foot, Lagos is the more honest base — see where to stay in Lagos.

Sleep in town if you want harbour grills and cape sunsets on the same week. Take Martinhal if pools and family resort infrastructure matter more than walking to supper.

Before you book

  • Wind and swell: Check forecasts before you commit to a full week — Atlantic exposure is the point, not a surprise.
  • Car: Treat hire as default; north-coast beaches and the lighthouse are not walkable from every pin.
  • Restaurant volume: Dining is simpler than Lagos — plan one or two east-coast splurge nights if that matters to your group.
  • Wider municipality: Vila do Bispo covers Arrifana and Cordoama if you want wild coast without sleeping on the peninsula.

Plan your arrival

Faro Airport to Sagres is typically 75–95 minutes on the A22 and N268. Pre-book transfers for late arrivals — see Faro Airport to Sagres. Car hire is the flexible choice for cape sunsets and Aljezur day loops.
