Sports and adventure in the Algarve – golf, surf, kite, hike and more

Active Algarve holidays explained - golf corridors, surf and kitesurf beaches, Rota Vicentina hikes, cycling, sailing, and when to book each.

The Algarve is not only beach-lounger territory. The same coast that hosts 42 golf courses also delivers Atlantic surf, lagoon-flat kite water, cliff hikes, and Monchique paragliding off Foia. This guide maps what to do where — and links to our detailed reviews.

Golf

Europe’s default winter golf belt runs Quinta do Lago → Vilamoura → Lagos → east to Monte Rei.

Book tee times before hotels in March–May and October.

Surf & bodyboard

West coast for Atlantic swell:

Central resort beaches are mellower — better for paddleboarding than serious surf.

Kitesurf & windsurf

  • Sagres — wind-exposed; advanced riders on big Atlantic days

Summer afternoon N wind is reliable; mornings suit golf, afternoons suit kite.

Paragliding & aerial sports

Serra de Monchique (Foia) is the Algarve’s paragliding launch — tandem flights on stable mornings, best in spring and autumn. Base in Monchique or drive from Portimão/Lagos.

No coastal bungee scene — aerial fixes here mean paragliding or helicopter tours from Vilamoura/Lagos marinas.

Hiking & trail running

  • Rota Vicentina — multi-day west-coast trail through Aljezur and Vila do Bispo
  • Monchique mountains — Foia and Picota forest walks

Trail shoes, sun, and water — cliff paths are unfenced.

Cycling & road riding

Rolling Barrocal lanes around Silves and Loulé suit road cycling in winter. Coastal EN125 sections are busy — prefer inland loops or guided van-supported tours. Golf resorts often rent e-bikes for non-golf days.

Tennis, padel & padel boom

Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo, and Amendoeira run tennis and padel courts — book through resort concierges. Amendoeira Golf Resort markets floodlit padel prominently.

Sailing, kayak & boat days

Diving & snorkel

Atlantic visibility varies. Portimão and Lagos dive centres run wreck and reef days. Lagoon sides are safer for snorkel beginners.

Motorsport

Autódromo Internacional do Algarve (Portimão circuit) — track days, F1/MotoGP when scheduled, and driving experiences.
