Monchique is a mountain break, not a beach one, and three days lets it feel that way. Don’t plan to commute to the coast every morning – you can’t, and you’ll spend the trip in the car. Instead, lock in one Foia morning and one drive down to the sea, and let the spa and the village meals fill the gaps.
Base at the Monchique Resort & Spa or a village guesthouse, and read where to stay in Monchique first. Book a hire car – daily taxis down to Rocha just don’t add up.
Before you go
- Where to stay in Monchique – village versus the resort outskirts
- Best hotels in Monchique – the Monchique Resort & Spa or a guesthouse
- Car hire confirmed before the non-refundable rooms
Day 1 – Arrive and village square
Morning
Land at Faro and drive up via Portimão (55 to 75 minutes), ideally in daylight. Check in at the resort or guesthouse, then walk the main square to get your bearings.
Afternoon
An easy loop of the village lanes – a café, a honey tasting at a farm shop, and a check of the spa timetable if you’re resort-based. No Foia drive on arrival night – save the ridge for the morning.
Evening
Piri-piri chicken or chanfana (a slow-cooked meat stew) in the village – keep it local. Pack some layers for tomorrow’s ridge.
Day 2 – Foia and Caldas
Morning
The Foia and Picota lookouts, early – that’s your best shot at clear views before the mist builds. Photograph the cork-forest switchbacks on the way up, and fuel up in the village before you climb.
Afternoon
A valley walk at Caldas de Monchique, or a spa session at the Monchique Resort & Spa when the views cloud over.
Evening
A quiet resort dinner or a second village spot. Taste the medronho (the local fruit brandy) only if you’re not driving.
Day 3 – Down to the coast
Morning
Drive down to Praia da Rocha, Alvor, or Lagos for the swim-and-grill payoff. Pick one coast town, not all three.
Afternoon
An optional Silves castle stop on the way back if the time and light allow – the Castelo de Silves sets red stone against green hills.
Evening
Fly home, or drop down to Portimão or Lagos for a longer beach week – see where to stay in Portimão.
If Foia clouds over
Mist erases the ridge views with no warning. Fall back in this order:
- A spa day at the Monchique Resort – the pools and treatments when the viewpoints fail.
- The Caldas valley – a shaded walk and a thermal-hotel lunch.
- Silves castle and the river path – inland history without the elevation.
- Move the coast descent to Day 2 if the forecast shows tomorrow clearer up at Foia.
- A forest track near Moinhos, but only when the fire risk is low and the trails are open.
Don’t try a Foia dawn and a Benagil boat from Lagos in the same day unless you’ve got the car for the week and you’re happy with a 4:00 alarm.
Which coast – Rocha or Lagos?
| Go to **Praia da Rocha** if… | Go to **Lagos** if… |
|---|---|
| Wide seafront sand and strip energy suit your group | Cliffs, marina boats, and an old-town dinner appeal |
| You’re heading to Portimão after Monchique | You might carry on a west-coast week in Lagos |
| One simple swim-and-sun afternoon is enough | You want the Ponta da Piedade paths as a bonus |
With three days, pick one coast town for the descent and save the other for next time.
What to book and when
| When | What |
|---|---|
| 8-10 weeks | Flights and a flexible hotel |
| 6 weeks | Monchique Resort & Spa or a guesthouse |
| 4 weeks | Car hire |
| 3 weeks | A daylight transfer, or a coast night first |
| 2 weeks | Spa slots for peak weekends |
| 1 week | Foia morning versus coast day, based on the mist forecast |
