Our verdict

Book the Pousada when you want to sleep on VRSA's main square with heritage design and plunge pools - Grand House if you prefer a Belle Époque mansion feel instead.

You wake up on the main square of Vila Real de Santo António and the whole town is right outside. Pousada Vila Real de Santo António (Pestana / Pousadas de Portugal) is spread across two landmark buildings on Praça Marquês de Pombal: the old Edifício da Alfândega holds reception and about 40 rooms, and the Edifício da Igreja opposite adds another 17. Both share courtyard and rooftop plunge pools with views toward Spain, the Guadiana, and the lighthouse.

Downstairs, the open kitchen restaurant So Fresh & So Good runs a pink pizza oven alongside its Mediterranean menu, and the bars do tapas and Algarve wine when you just want a glass before dinner. Small dogs (up to about 15 kg) are welcome for a nightly supplement. The one catch: the square itself is car-free, so parking sits nearby rather than at the door.

Who it suits

Couples and families who want a proper town base, not a beach compound – pools in the courtyard, breakfast on the square, and the Guadiana doing most of the work at sunset. If you like the slower, historic pace Pousadas do well, this is one of the better examples of it.

Skip it if sand outside the lobby matters more than architecture. Sleep at Vasco da Gama or Baía Beach Hotel on the Monte Gordo strip instead – both are a short drive away.

Worth it?

Yes, for a square-front stay in one of the eastern Algarve’s best-looking buildings. Compare it with Bordoy Grand House before you book, and check where to stay in Vila Real de Santo António for the wider area picture.
