Almost every Algarve holiday starts at Faro Airport (FAO) – officially Aeroporto de Faro – a compact single-terminal building beside the Ria Formosa lagoon, a few kilometres west of Faro city. Arrivals are manageable until a summer Saturday stacks passport control, car-hire desks, and the taxi rank. Decide how you are leaving the terminal before you land, not while you are standing in the queue.
This page is your FAO hub: what to expect inside, how to choose transfer, taxi, or hire car, and links to route guides with realistic drive times to each resort coast.
Quick facts
| IATA code | FAO |
| Location | Montenegro parish, ~6–8 km from Faro historic centre |
| Main road | A22 motorway links west (Lagos, Portimão) and east (Tavira, Spain) |
| Typical open hours | First departures from ~06:00; last arrivals often until ~23:00–00:00 (season-dependent) |
| Best for | Direct access to central and eastern Algarve; competitive with Lisbon only when total door-to-door time is priced in |
Arrivals – what happens when you land
Follow Arrivals signage to passport control (EU/EEA lanes move faster; third-country queues lengthen in July and August). Baggage reclaim is a short walk in Terminal 1; most charter and scheduled flights use the same core building.
After customs you enter the public hall with:
- Car-hire counters (pre-book online, then walk to your broker desk – summer queues at the rank outside are separate from the queue inside)
- Official taxi rank outside (metered; surcharges may apply at night – confirm before you sit)
- Meet-and-greet drivers for pre-booked private transfers (they usually hold a name board near arrivals exit)
- ATMs, SIM sellers, and café – fine for cash and snacks; do not assume every driver takes every card brand without asking
Wi‑Fi and toilets are available airside and landside; charge phones before you hunt for your driver in case of delay.
If you are connecting to Faro old town the same night, the city is a 10–15 minute taxi in light traffic – see Faro Airport to Faro city. If you are crossing the lagoon to Praia de Faro or barrier islands, that is a different route (often via airport-adjacent roads and the airport bridge route) – tell your driver the hotel or ferry pier, not only “the beach.”
How to leave the airport – choose your mode
| Mode | Best when | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked private transfer | Families, late arrivals, golf luggage, cliff resorts, fixed budgeting | Confirm child seats, night tariff, and exact hotel wing |
| Shared shuttle | Solo travellers, flexible timing, light bags | Multi-drop routes along the coast |
| Taxi / ride-hail | Off-peak landings, short hops to Faro | Saturday evening queues; surge pricing |
| Hire car | Week-long coast hopping, Monchique, Aljezur, multiple towns | Night pick-up fatigue; toll tag (Via Verde); parking at Old Town hotels |
| Public bus | Budget run to Faro bus station | Awkward with large luggage to west-coast resorts |
Compare Algarve airport transfers and car hire in one session before you pay for flights – then lock the leg that matches your hotel postcode.
Drive times from FAO to main holiday bases
Figures are typical off-peak by car or private transfer; add 15–30 minutes on peak summer motorways (especially Sunday afternoon eastbound and Friday westbound).
| Destination | Typical time | Deep-dive guide |
|---|---|---|
| Faro city / marina | 10–15 min | Faro Airport to Faro city |
| Estádio Algarve / Parque das Cidades | 10–20 min | Estádio Algarve (A22 westbound) |
| Vilamoura / Quarteira | 20–30 min | Faro Airport to Vilamoura |
| Albufeira | 35–45 min | Faro Airport to Albufeira |
| Portimão / Praia da Rocha | 50–65 min | Faro Airport to Portimão |
| Lagos | 60–75 min | Faro Airport to Lagos |
| Tavira | 35–45 min | Faro Airport to Tavira |
Loulé town (Saturday market) sits inland between Faro and the coast – often 25–35 minutes from FAO depending on traffic. Silves, Carvoeiro, and Sagres are not in the table above but still route through the same motorway logic: west takes longer, always check your hotel pin before you quote a price to a driver.
Should you stay near the airport?
Usually one night maximum unless you have an absurdly early departure or a late inbound flight.
- Pros: Short return leg, easy hire-car pick-up, quick access to Ria Formosa walks at Ludo / Ancão.
- Cons: You miss Faro old-town atmosphere on foot; you are not at the beach resort you booked.
For a city night, stay in Cidade Velha and taxi in – see where to stay in Faro and hotels such as EVA Senses or Occidental Faro for contrasting styles. Airport-fringe guesthouses suit pure logistics, not romance.
Flights – booking with FAO in mind
Most UK and European leisure routes are seasonal; winter schedules are thinner but often cheaper. When you compare flights to the Algarve, weigh:
- Lisbon (LIS) or Seville (SVQ) only if the fare gap beats two extra hours of ground time and second transfers.
- Arrival time – landing after 22:00 with children pushes you toward private transfer rather than bus or rank roulette.
- Departure day – west-coast villas need generous margin for Sunday traffic back to FAO.
Departures – leaving without stress
- Aim at the terminal 2 hours before short-haul departures in peak summer; 90 minutes can work off-season if you are hand-luggage only and pre-checked in.
- Return hire cars – follow broker signs for fuel policy and drop-off lane; full-to-full is common.
- Security queues grow on Sunday late afternoon when the whole coast seems to fly home at once.
- Shops airside cover basics; do not rely on extensive luxury retail.
If you overnighter near FAO, book a morning transfer back to the terminal rather than cutting it to the minute – the A22 pinch points near Faro and Albufeira junctions are predictable in August.
Ria Formosa – you landed beside a natural park
The airport sits on the edge of the Ria Formosa lagoon system – flamingos, salt pans, and island beaches are minutes away once you are mobile. If you have a long layover or an extra day, walk Ludo and Ancão trails or open birdwatching in the Algarve instead of treating FAO as a nowhere stop. Wider lagoon context: Ria Formosa Natural Park.
Shopping beside the terminal
Forum Algarve sits on the N125 west entrance to Faro — roughly five minutes from arrivals with 117 shops, Auchan hypermarket, and NOS cinema. Useful for a rainy layover, SIM-card and pharmacy errands, or stocking a villa before you drive east to Tavira. Full regional map: shopping in the Algarve.
Common questions
How far is Faro Airport from Albufeira? In light traffic, plan 35–45 minutes by car via the A22; Saturday evening queues can add time. See our Faro Airport to Albufeira guide for transfer vs taxi notes.
How far is Faro Airport from Lagos? Expect 60–75 minutes west on the A22 – longer in August Sunday returns. Full route tips: Faro Airport to Lagos.
Is there only one terminal at FAO? Most holiday flights use the main Terminal 1 arrivals hall – compact, single baggage reclaim, short walk to meet-and-greet drivers.
Taxi or pre-booked transfer? Taxis work off-peak; pre-booked private transfer wins for families, late landings, and fixed budgeting. Compare options on Algarve airport transfers.
Do I need a car from the airport? Only if your week includes daily beach hops, Monchique, or multiple towns. City-break Faro or one-resort weeks can use transfer + occasional taxi – see car hire once your itinerary is clear.
Plan the rest of the trip from here
