Camping in the Algarve works when you pick a licensed park (or a proper motorhome service area) and match the region to your week – west-coast cliffs, central sand towns, or quieter Ria Formosa east. Wild overnighting on beaches and rural pull-offs is not a grey-area loophole here: Portugal pushes licensed sites and Áreas de Serviço de Autocaravanas (ASA). Plan for a booked pitch, not hope.

Rules worth knowing before you pitch
- Licensed parks first. Look for RNT / tourism registration on the park site; RAARA and similar networks list legal motorhome service areas.
- Wild camping on beaches and dunes is not the plan. Fines and move-ons are real in summer hotspot zones.
- Quiet hours and gate rules are normal – midnight silence is common.
- Peak July-August: book early, confirm electricity amps, and check whether pools or Wi-Fi cost extra.
- Autumn to spring: many big parks stay open; smaller coastal sites may close or reduce services.
Region map in plain English
West – Lagos, Luz, Sagres, Aljezur
Atlantic beaches, cliff walks, and wind. Strong if you want Praia da Luz evenings and Sagres sunset drives without sleeping in a resort hotel.

- Orbitur Valverde (toward Praia da Luz) – large shaded grid, year-round Orbitur brand; good baseline west-coast pitch.
- Orbitur Sagres – pine-dune setting near Cabo de São Vicente; simpler and windier than Turiscampo.
- Camping Serrão (Aljezur coast hinterland) – west-coast / Costa Vicentina mood when you want quieter surfing villages.
Central – Alvor, Albufeira, Armação de Pêra, Silves fringe
Easier airport maths from Faro, flatter sand towns, and marina strip access without the full west-coast drive.

- Parque de Campismo de Armação de Pêra – large municipal park at the town entrance; pitches, caravans, bungalows, mobile homes; open all year; roughly 700 m to Praia de Armação de Pêra. Do not confuse with inland Pêra parish or with Parque Canelas near Silves.

- Camping Alvor – nature-leaning site on the approach to Alvor; base for lagoon and Portimão days.
- Camping Albufeira – central-coast convenience when your day trips are strip / Old Town / Olhos de Água (confirm exact access road and noise week by week).
- Parque de Campismo de Canelas (Silves / inland of Armação de Pêra) – separate park from the Armação municipal site; quieter hinterland feel.
East – Cabanas, Tavira, Ria Formosa, Olhão
Lagoon islands, bike paths, and slower evenings. Good when hotel prices in Tavira hurt and you still want ferry-to-island mornings.

- Parque de Campismo e Caravanismo de Olhão – pine woodland at Pinheiros de Marim on the Ria Formosa reserve edge (also listed under Sindicato / Mais Sindicato names). Pools and sports on site; drive into town for markets and ferries.
- Camping Lagoão – rustic Moncarapacho campsite (also appears as Camping Algarve Moncarapacho); pool and pitches for tents and vans. Directory/OTA booking rather than a big branded site.
- Orla Ilha de Tavira Ecoglamping – glamping, bell tents, and shaded pitches on Ilha de Tavira between lagoon and Atlantic. Island ferry logistics; not a mainland Tavira hotel.

- Algarve Motorhome Park Tavira (and other licensed ASAs east) – overnight service stops when you are touring, not holiday-park living.
- Falésia / other central ASAs – useful hops between FAO and west-coast parks; check current opening hours and dump fees on RAARA (Portugal’s motorhome-area network) listings.
Glamping without the tent
If you hate groundsheets but like park life, hunt mobile homes, bungalows, and “glamping” labels inside licensed sites rather than wild canvas. Turiscampo-class parks sell this hardest; Armação de Pêra’s bungalow categories are the budget version of the same idea. On the east barrier islands, Orla Ilha de Tavira is the live eco-glamping pick. Always compare the unit inventory photo with what your confirmation names – grades vary a lot.
Motorhomes and caravans
- Prefer parks with a listed camper service / dump point, or a registered ASA.
- Summer weekends fill coastal Orbitur pitches – reserve or be ready to push inland.
- Night one after a late FAO landing: transfer or hotel, collect the van next morning if your kit arrives separately.
- Pair with car hire only if you need a second vehicle for day trips; many motorhomers skip the hire car entirely.
