Albufeira is the resort everyone has heard of. Golden sand, a cobbled Old Town, and so many hotels that you can wing it and still have a good week. But here’s the thing: the part of Albufeira you pick decides what your evenings feel like.
Sleep in the Old Town and dinner is on foot, with steps down to the beach. Sleep in Oura and the bars run late right outside your window. Sleep on the Falésia cliffs and you get pine shade, big resort pools, and a quieter night. Get the area wrong and you’ll be in a taxi every evening chasing the vibe you thought you’d booked.

Who Albufeira suits
If it’s your first time and you want one base with plenty of restaurants and easy boat trips, the Old Town fringe is hard to beat. You won’t have to learn rural roads on day one.
If you’re a family or a group that can shrug off a bit of noise, you’ll still want Falésia or São Rafael over a front-row Oura room. You get the buzz nearby without it keeping the kids awake.
If you want silence after 10 p.m. in July, this isn’t the spot for a Strip-facing room. Book the marina or a cliff resort instead.
Plenty of repeat visitors split the difference: they sleep in Falésia or Olhos de Água or São Rafael for the sand and the spa, then taxi into the Old Town a couple of nights for a proper cobbled dinner.
Before you book
- Noise: Oura and the Strip hum until late in July and August. Ask for a high floor or a room over the pool if you sleep light.
- Beach access: Falésia resorts often reach the sand by cliff paths and stairs. The views are worth it, but they’re hard work if anyone in your group struggles with steps.
- Parking: Central spots fill fast in peak season. Confirm hotel parking, or save car hire for day trips only.
- Cancellation: Flexible rates cost a little more, and they save you when flight times move.

Families who want pools and a kids’ club without Strip noise usually land on Falésia or Olhos de Água or São Rafael. Couples who want beach mornings and Old Town dinners do best on the Old Town fringe, or a short taxi from Oura.
Plan your arrival
Faro Airport (FAO) is roughly 35 to 50 minutes from central Albufeira, depending on traffic and which zone you’re in. Pre-book a private or shared transfer if you’re landing tired or travelling with kids and bags. Taxis are fine off-peak, but the queues build on summer Friday evenings.
Compare flights into Faro against your hotel’s cancellation window before you lock a rate you can’t change.

Common booking mistakes
- Booking the Strip when you wanted quiet. Oura looks “central” online, then keeps you up at night. Ask for a pool wing or high floor, or just pick São Rafael or Olhos de Água / Falésia instead.
- Assuming Old Town means beach on your doorstep. Some addresses do sit right above Pescadores, but many still mean steps, crowds, and a taxi to wider sand. Check the map before you book.
- Trusting “walk to the beach” on the Falésia cliffs. Those paths and stairs are stunning and brutal with a pushchair. Confirm access in the hotel review first.
- Counting on parking. August fills Avenida dos Descobrimentos and the marina fringe fast. Confirm hotel bays, or budget for taxis, before you add car hire for day one.
When to go
May, June, and September are the sweet spot: warm sea, thinner crowds, and Old Town tables you can actually book.
July and August bring the heat and the noise. The Strip runs late, Pescadores sand is packed, and Falésia rates climb. Book flexible cancellation if you come now.
April and October reward walkers and golfers with lower prices, though the Atlantic breeze can cool an exposed beach in the afternoon. Winter is mild and lovely for Old Town culture, but many beach clubs and boat operators wind down, so it’s a weak choice if you’ve got your heart set on boat days.
Evenings & nightlife
Your postcode decides your nights more than any single bar recommendation.
