Restaurant review

A Tia Bia

Loulé

A Tia Bia review — traditional mountain restaurant and guesthouse in Barranco do Velho, Salir, on the Caldeirão road inland from Loulé.

Our verdict

A Tia Bia is the inland meal worth the drive from the coast — reserve for Sunday lunch, order migas de caça or oven-roasted kid, and treat it as a half-day Serra excursion rather than a marina walk-in.

A Tia Bia is a family-run mountain restaurant and guesthouse in Barranco do Velho, Salir — deep in Loulé municipality on the winding N124 / EN2 through the Serra do Caldeirão. The house has fed hikers, motorcyclists, and weekend drivers since the 1980s with Portuguese serra cooking: migas de caça, wild boar stew, oven-roasted black pork cheeks, kid goat, lamb shoulder, and garlic fried squid. Two heated interior rooms and two outdoor terraces fill fast; candles, wood, and road-trip chatter give it an authentic inland mood rather than resort polish.

Lunch and dinner run through most of the week, but the restaurant is closed all day Monday and closed Sunday evenings — plan around that before you drive up from Vilamoura or Quinta. The seasonal calendar typically runs mid-February to late December. Portions are large and fairly priced for the quality; reviewers consistently praise the cabrito, rooster stew, and migas plates. Vegetarians will find starters but few main courses — this is a meat-and-game menu first. Call or email to reserve, especially Sunday lunch when tables turn quickly.

Who it suits: couples and families with a hire car who want a real Portuguese mountain lunch away from marina strips; Via Algarviana walkers at the Sector 5/6 junction; repeat visitors who treat the drive as part of the day. Less ideal without a car, for light eaters, or if you need Monday or Sunday-night dining. The same property has nine guest rooms if you want to stay overnight in the hills. Dogs are welcome on the terrace.
