Five days is the sweet spot for Lagos. You see the town and the cliffs properly without racing the whole west coast. This plan locks in one boat morning and one escape day, and leaves everything else loose.
Stay in the historic centre or out at Meia Praia, book your Faro Airport to Lagos transfer, and keep one afternoon free for wind or rain. Start with where to stay in Lagos so your hotel matches the boat-morning logistics.
Before you go
- Where to stay in Lagos – centre versus Meia Praia
- Flights and a transfer locked before the non-refundable hotel
- Book your Benagil or grotto morning slot
Day 1 – Arrive and marina walk
Morning
Land at Faro for a 55 to 75 minute drive west, then check in and drop the bags. Centre guests can walk to Praça Gil Eanes. Meia Praia guests, note the bus times for tonight’s dinner.
Afternoon
Stroll the marina – the boat kiosks, the fortress views, and the boards for the week’s cave tours. A light swim at Meia Praia if you’ve got the energy.
Evening
Easy seafood on Rua Infante Dom Henrique or by the marina. No long drive on arrival night.
Day 2 – Ponta da Piedade on foot
Morning
Walk the cliff paths at Ponta da Piedade – start early for softer light and fewer tour groups. Only hire a kayak if the wind is low.
Afternoon
Swim at a small cove, or taxi to Meia Praia for wide flat sand that’s easy with children. Gelato back in town.
Evening
Sunset from the town walls or the marina. Reconfirm your Benagil boat for tomorrow.
Day 3 – Benagil by boat
Morning
Your boat tour out to the sea caves and Benagil when the operators run. Morning slots beat the afternoon chop most summer weeks.
Afternoon
Rest. The pool at Iberostar Selection or Cascade Wellness, or a quiet café if the boat ran early.
Evening
Book dinner in the centre lanes. One reservation is plenty after a morning at sea.
Day 4 – Sagres or Monchique
Morning
Pick one escape (there’s a guide below). Don’t try to do both unless you’ve got the car for the week and you’re happy with a long day.
Afternoon
Head back for a low-key Lagos evening. If you chose Monchique and still have light, stop at the Porto de Mós viewpoint.
Evening
Pack up and confirm your transfer time. The west coast needs a buffer on summer Sundays.
Day 5 – Last swim and home
Morning
A short beach session at Meia Praia or Praia da Batata by the fort, then a souvenir stop on Rua Lançarote de Freitas.
Afternoon
Transfer to Faro with extra time for the longer drive east.
Evening
Fly home.
If your Benagil boat gets cancelled
West wind and swell scrub the cave trips with no warning. Fall back in this order:
- Rebook with the same operator for the next calm morning – often Day 4, before Sagres.
- Kayak or walk Ponta da Piedade if the open sea is rough but the inshore water is calm.
- Drive the coast – grab car hire for a half-day of Portimão or Lagos viewpoints if you don’t have a car.
- Stay in the centre – the Mercado de Lagos, the fortress, and a covered lunch if it’s pouring.
- Book a spa afternoon at Cascade Wellness when the sea is clearly off.
Never stack a replacement boat and Sagres on the same day. You’ll rush both.
Sagres or Monchique – which day out?
| Go to **Sagres** if… | Go to **Monchique** if… |
|---|---|
| You want fortress history and the wild Cabo de São Vicente light | You want cooler mountain air and forest walks |
| Atlantic drama and surf beaches beat cobbles for you | A heatwave is making coast afternoons unbearable |
| You might not get back to the far west soon | You’d rather have one big lunch inland |
| You’re fine driving 45 minutes or so each way | You want orange valleys and viewpoints, no cliff boats |
Sagres wins for first-timers who’ve already ticked off the Lagos cliffs. Monchique wins in August heat, or when the Day 3 boat already filled your sea quota. With five days, pick one and save the other for next time, or pair it with Portimão as a two-base trip.
Your weather buffer
Keep Day 4 loose. If Day 3’s wind cancels the boat, swap it to Day 4 and use Day 3 for the Ponta paths. The afternoon sea breeze is common, so try to schedule boats before 11:00.
What to book and when
| When | What |
|---|---|
| 8-10 weeks | Flights and a flexible hotel |
| 6 weeks | Hotel from best hotels in Lagos |

| 3-4 weeks | Benagil or grotto morning – book early for August |
| 2 weeks | Centre dinner for Day 1 or 3 |
| 1 week | Sagres or Monchique, based on the forecast |
Next: Sort your area with where to stay in Lagos, then compare your transfer options. Thinking of two bases? Read where to stay in Portimão.
