Lagos 3-day itinerary

Three days does Lagos justice if you sort two things early: one boat morning and one cliff walk. Get those booked and the rest of the trip falls into place.

Stay in the historic centre or out at Meia Praia, and read where to stay in Lagos before you pay for marina distance you won’t use. Book your Faro Airport to Lagos transfer too – it’s a longer drive west than people expect.

Day 1 – Arrive and old town

Morning

Land at Faro for a 55 to 75 minute drive west, then check in. Centre guests can stroll to Praça Gil Eanes. Staying at Meia Praia? Check the bus times now for tonight’s dinner in town.

Afternoon

Wander the marina, read the boards for tomorrow’s cave tours, and take in the fortress views. A light swim at Praia da Batata if you’ve still got the energy.

Evening

Easy seafood on Rua Infante Dom Henrique. No long drive on your first night – one booking is enough.

Day 2 – Ponta da Piedade and the boat

Morning

Walk the Ponta da Piedade cliff paths before the midday heat – photo stops and stairways down to little beaches. Only hire a kayak if the wind is low.

Then take your boat tour out to the sea caves and Benagil when the operators run. If the wind’s up, do the cliffs on foot today and ask to push the boat to tomorrow.

Afternoon

Rest up. A pool, a quiet café, or the wide sand at Meia Praia if the boat finished early and your legs are willing.

Evening

Dinner in the centre lanes. If you’ve hired a car, check the Sagres forecast for tomorrow.

Day 3 – Sagres or Meia Praia

Morning

Sagres (car helps): the fortress and the Cabo de São Vicente lighthouse – wild Atlantic, about 45 minutes each way. Worth it once if you won’t be back west soon.

Beach instead: a morning swim at Meia Praia, with the Porto de Mós viewpoint if you’ve still got time.

Afternoon

Souvenir stop on Rua Lançarote de Freitas, then leave a buffer and take your transfer to Faro. Build in extra time for the drive back east.

Evening

Fly home.

If your Benagil boat gets cancelled

West wind scrubs the cave trips with no warning, and on three days you can’t always wait it out.

1. Walk Ponta da Piedade instead. The paths and viewpoints are still the best of Lagos.
2. Rebook the boat only if your flight leaves room for a next-morning slot.
3. Stay in the centre – the Mercado de Lagos, the fort, and a covered lunch if it’s raining.
4. Don’t pile Sagres and a replacement boat into one day. You’ll rush both.
