Restaurant review

Restaurante Mato à Vista

Albufeira

Mato à Vista review - Paderne institution since 1982 for wild game, cataplana, and Barrocal terrace dining away from the Albufeira strip.

Our verdict

Mato à Vista is the inland Algarve meal worth driving for - book ahead on summer weekends, expect traditional portions and a serious wine cellar, and pair it with a castle or market day rather than a pool afternoon.

Restaurante Mato à Vista has sat in Cabanita, Paderne since June 1982, inland from the Albufeira coast in the Barrocal countryside. It’s built for long lunches under a shaded terrace or winter dinners in split interior rooms, with a wall of wine on show and a small gourmet shop beside the main dining wing.

The menu stays proudly regional: fried wild rabbit, partridge, wild boar stew, pork tenderloin cataplana, polvo à lagareiro, and seasonal stews. Portions are generous, and many mains are priced for two. Lunch runs from midday Friday to Sunday; Tuesday to Thursday evenings start around 17:00. Check the hours on matoavista.com before you set off, because Monday is closed. Main courses run roughly 21 to 50 euros depending on the dish.

Who it suits: food travellers chasing real Portuguese plates somewhere that feels local, not imported; groups and celebrations who can fill a table and share the two-person platters; wine drinkers, since the house keeps 600-plus Portuguese bottles. It’s a bad fit if you want beach-club sushi, a five-minute stroll from your hotel, or snack-bar prices.
