Pousada Palácio Estoi is an eighteenth-century palace turned pousada (a heritage hotel) above the village of Estoi, a short drive from Faro. You don’t have to be a guest to enjoy it – people come just for the rococo façade, the chapel tiles, the terraced gardens, and a coffee on the terrace. It’s the dose of culture between lagoon days and an airport run.
Who should go
If you love architecture and azulejo tiles, the baroque excess here photographs beautifully. It’s also a lovely splurge lunch or overnight for couples who don’t want a resort animation schedule. And it’s handy on a Faro layover, since Estoi is minutes from the airport when traffic is light. Garden walkers can treat the grounds as a shady open-air museum.
Skip it if you’ve got young children desperate for slides – pair it with a park day instead. It’s optional polish on an east-coast trip, not a must-see.
What to expect
As a day visitor you’ll usually get the restaurant and bar terraces and the garden viewpoints, though it depends on hotel policy that day. Weddings and events can close off areas, so call ahead on summer Saturdays. Stay overnight and you get the pool, a room in the palace wing, and the quieter evening light in the gardens.
The village of Estoi below has pastel façades and a local church square. Combine it with Ria Formosa ferries or the Museu da Cortiça inland. Planning a ceremony? See our Algarve weddings guide and where to stay in Faro.
Practical tips
Book a lunch table on weekends – the terrace seats look out over the gardens. Check for event closures, because a palace wedding can shut off garden access. Come in the morning for photos, before the harsh midday sun hits the façades. If romance is the whole point, stay the night – the gardens empty out and the evening light does the rest. The cork museum at São Brás de Alportel is a short drive north if you want to make a day of it.
Worth it?
Yes if you collect palaces, gardens, or special meals – one to two hours covers a visit, and an overnight rewards slow travellers. Skip if your week is purely beach and water park. Next: it complements the eastern Algarve’s nature far better than it competes with Benagil, so pair it with a Ria Formosa day.
