Alte gets called the prettiest village in the Barrocal for a reason, and Queda do Vigário is why you end up staying longer than planned. The waterfall drops about 24 metres into a bowl-shaped lake right on the edge of the village, and Visit Loulé has smartened up the whole space in recent years. It still feels like a nature stop, not a theme park, but you’re not scrambling over rubble to get there anymore.
Park at the car park next to the cemetery and pick your way down: a wooden staircase or a dirt track of roughly 300 metres. Either way, wear shoes with some grip – the path turns slick after rain. Once you’ve had your swim or your photo, walk back up into Alte for coffee, local crafts, and a slower afternoon that feels a world away from the Quinta and Vilamoura crowds.
Good for families and couples on a hire-car loop through Alte and the Barrocal who want water and shade without the drive to Monchique. Skip it if steps are a genuine no-go for your group, or you only have time for the village square. Official notes: visit-loule.pt.
