Why visit
Lagos is where dramatic coastline meets an old town you can actually enjoy on foot. Headline cliff viewpoints, boat access to the grottos, and enough evening energy for proper dinners and bars – but without the full-throttle intensity of the bigger party hubs. It manages to be scenic and practical at once, which is exactly why it works so well for a first Algarve trip.
One week here and you can mix swimmable beaches, photography walks, and a real town atmosphere without complicated logistics. Most things you want are walkable; the rest is a short drive or boat ride.
Best for
Outdoor-focused couples who want a viewpoint walk one day and a kayak the next. Active families who like a base with character as well as sand. And travellers who refuse to choose between beach time and photogenic coastline – here you get both from one base.
Beaches & outdoors
Meia Praia gives you long, open sand and room to spread out. Camilo and Dona Ana deliver the classic cliff-and-cove scenery, but expect steps and crowds that fill the small sand fast in summer.
The smart move is to split your days: one viewpoint or cliff-walk day, one sea day by kayak or boat, rather than cramming both into a single afternoon.
Food
Lagos is strong on grilled fish, cataplana, and relaxed marina dining. Book the popular waterfront tables in peak season, and use the old-town side streets for better-value lunches.
Day trips
Sagres for rugged headland views, Portimão/Praia da Rocha for wider sands, and Monchique for cooler inland air on the hottest days. Aljezur and the west coast are within reach if you want Atlantic surf drama.
Getting around
The centre is walkable, but parking near the old-town lanes gets frustrating in busy periods. E-bikes or short taxi rides save you the repeated uphill walks to the cliff viewpoints. Faro Airport is typically 60-75 minutes.
When to go
June and September are the sweet spot for weather, water temperature, and crowd levels. July-August is high-energy but busy. Winter is excellent for coastal walks and dramatic sea views.
