Our verdict

Book Alte Hotel for a calm inland week centred on Alte's waterfall and river beach. Skip it if you want beach-at-breakfast on the coastal strip.

Swap the promenade for hills and you get Alte Hotel, a 3-star stay on the Estrada de Santa Margarida at Montinho, about 1km from whitewashed Alte. Rooms look out over mountains, garden, and pool rather than a car park or a busy strip, and the whole place leans into walking, cycling (BTT), tennis, and golf day trips instead of beach clubs. Reception can sort car hire if you want to reach Albufeira (about 35km) or Faro (about 55km) for a day.

There’s banquet space for bigger groups, around 200 people, and two smaller meeting rooms (Almond Tree and Palm) if a family week doubles as a work session or celebration. But the real draw is simpler: quiet evenings, and a village that goes properly still after dark.

Who this suits

Hikers, cyclists, and families building a slow Alte loop around Queda do Vigário waterfall and a swim at Praia Fluvial de Alte, the river beach.

Skip it if you need marina nightlife or sand outside the lobby. That’s Quarteira, Falésia, or Praia de Faro, not these hills.

Worth it?

Yes, as a simple, calm inland Alte base. And read where to stay in Loulé for how Alte fits into the wider area.
