Why visit
Most visitors land at Faro Airport (FAO) and treat the city as a place to drive through. That is a mistake. Faro is a compact city with a walled historic core, the best transport links in the region, and direct access to the Ria Formosa lagoon and its barrier islands – all of which make it one of the most efficient bases in the Algarve.
If you want a short break with easy logistics, real culture, and island beaches without a long transfer, Faro is hard to beat. You can walk the old town in the morning, ferry to a sandbar island in the afternoon, and still reach the coastal resorts in under an hour when you fancy a change of scene.
Best for
Short city-and-coast breaks. Travellers without a car, since you genuinely do not need one here. And anyone who wants lagoon and island experiences without burning half a day on transfers each way.
Beaches & outdoors
Faro’s best beach days are usually ferry days. Boats to Farol or Culatra drop you on long sandy stretches with a calm, car-free feel. Kayak and lagoon tours are high-value, especially early morning or late afternoon when the light and birdlife are at their best.
Food
Look for seafood rice, clams, and simple grilled fish around the marina and the market. Weekday lunch menus near the centre give you the best value of the week.
Day trips
Olhão for island ferries, Tavira for a slower riverside day, and Loulé for market mornings and inland contrast. All are short, low-stress hops.
Getting around
Faro is easy on foot in the old centre. Buses and taxis make airport and beach transfers simple, and you can see most highlights without renting a car at all. When you do want the wider coast, drive times to the main resort areas are short by Algarve standards.
When to go
Spring is excellent for birding and mild weather. June and September are strong for swimming with fewer crowds than peak summer. Winter suits low-key city breaks and food-focused weekends.
