Most visitors land at Faro Airport (FAO) and treat the city as a transfer stop. That’s a mistake. Faro is walkable and easy, and it opens straight onto the Ria Formosa lagoon: culture mornings, island beaches by ferry, and seafood dinners with no resort-strip noise.
The pace is gentler than Lagos or Albufeira. Lean into that instead of trying to force a cliff-and-cave day every afternoon.

Ria Formosa Natural Park isn’t one ticketed gate. It’s a 60-kilometre system of channels, salt marshes, and barrier islands. From Faro you can reach Deserta and Farol by ferry for long sandy stretches and a car-free feel.
Check the departure boards the evening before. Summer schedules are fuller than the shoulder season, but they still shift with the weather. Pack water and sun protection, and keep a city backup in mind – museum coffee, covered lanes – in case the wind makes the crossing uncomfortable.
